UPSC Civil Services Eligibility Criteria 


  • The candidate must be a citizen of India 
  • The candidate must be a citizen of Nepal or a subject of Bhutan 
  • The candidate must be a Tibetan Refugee who came to India before January 1, 1962, to be settled permanently in India 
  • The candidate must be a person of Indian Origin who has migrated from Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Myanmar, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Uganda, Vietnam, Zaire, or Zambia with an intention of permanently settling in India.

Educational Qualification:

  • Applicants must hold a graduate degree or equivalent qualification from a recognized university
  • Candidates who have appeared for the qualifying examination and are awaiting results or those who are yet to appear for the qualifying examination are also eligible for the Preliminary Examination. Such candidates have to produce proof of passing the said examination along with the application for the Main Examination Candidates with professional and technical qualifications recognized by the Government or its equivalent are also eligible to apply
  • Candidates who have passed the final year of MBBS or any Medical Examination but are yet to complete the internship can also appear for the Main Examination. However, they must submit a certificate from the concerned University that they have passed the final professional medical examination

Age Limit:
candidate should be a minimum of 21 years and a maximum of 32 years old as of August 01, 2021. But he/she must have been born not earlier than August 02, 1987, and not later than August 01, 1998. Necessary action will take to make corresponding changes in respective Rules/Regulations pertaining to various services.

  • SC/ST- Upto 5 years
  • OBC- up to 3 years
  • Defence Services Personnel disabled in operations during hostilities- Upto 3 years
  • Ex-servicemen- Upto 5 years
  • ECOs/SSCOs who have completed an initial period of assignment of five years of Military Service- Upto 5 years
  • PwD candidates- Upto 10 years
  • Domiciles of Jammu and Kashmir from January 1, 1980 to December 31, 1989- Upto 5 years.
UPSC Civil Services Exam Pattern

Indian Administrative Service (IAS) is one of the All India Services, which includes Indian Foreign Services (IFS) and Indian Police Services (IPS). There are three ways to become an IAS officer, Through Civil Services Examination (CSE) conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), the promotion of State Civil Service officers to IAS and the selection of non-State Civil Service officers.  The best way to become an IAS officer is through clearing the CSE conducted by the UPSC because it will take you to the highest positions, such as Cabinet Secretary. The Civil Services is a common examination conducted every year to shortlist the candidates for various services, such as IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS, IAAS, etc. To pass with flying colors in Civil Services, aspirants should know about the important stages to become an IAS officer.

Preliminary Exam:

The Prelim Exam will be a screening test for the candidates. The prelim examination will consist of two papers. General Studies Paper-I and General Studies Paper-II. The total marks for the prelim exam will be 400. The candidates who will score minimum qualifying marks 33% in the General Studies Paper-II and total qualifying marks in the General Studies Paper-I will be shortlisted by the commission for the main exam. The marks of the prelim exam will not play any role in making the final Merit List. The points related to the prelim exam are as given.

  • Total Marks will be 400.
  • There will be negative marking of 1/3 i.e. 0.33 for any wrong answer.
  • If the candidate will give more than one answer then that answer will be assumed as the wrong answer.
  • There will be no penalty for the unattended question.
  • The candidates who will be shortlisted by Prelim Exam will appear the main exam.

Main Exam:
The main exam will include the written exam as well as the interview round. The written exam will consist of 9 tests.

  • Download and read the official notification details.
  • Read the information carefully & Click on “Apply Online”.
  • Complete the application form with all required details.
  • Complete the Online Registration & Click on the “Submit” batten.
  • Take a printout of the Online application for future use.
Step-2: Registration Part-2
1. Post receipt of the fee, fill other details of the IAS Application form
2. Enter the choice of IAS Exam Centre
3. Enter the qualification and other communication details
4. Post verification, click on submit to proceed to the next step
Step-3: Registration Part 2
1. Click on the link or blank space provided to upload the photograph
2. Browse the location of the image and select the image
3. Click on open/upload
4. Check if the image is opened correctly and clearly
5. Repeat the same steps to upload the image of the signature
